Why I Watched It

I was so excited to watch The Devil Wears Prada 2 because I’m obsessed with the first movie, I can practically quote it word for word! I wasn’t able to see the sequel when it was in theaters because of my work schedule, so as soon as it started streaming (and I had some free time), I was ready!

What I Loved

The Devil Wears Prada 2 is packed with callbacks to the original movie, beginning with an opening sequence that immediately brings a wave of nostalgia. I loved spotting all the parallels! One of my favorites reminded me of the scene in the original film as Andy she runs through the streets of New York City after she’d been styled by Nigel. UGH, I LOVE IT!!!! It felt like the director and production team knew exactly which moments fans would want to see revisited.

Anne Hathaway and Meryl Streep are still a fantastic acting duo as Andy Sachs and Miranda Priestly. I also know I’m not the only one wondering why Andy seems so blindly loyal to Miranda! Emily Blunt remains hilarious)and slightly more unhinged) as Emily, delivering plenty of backhanded compliments to Andy from her first scene to the last. Stanley Tucci continues to bring so much warmth to the movie as Nigel.

There are also quite a few celebrity cameos throughout The Devil Wears Prada 2, from scenes in the Hamptons to Milan. And I haven’t seen Lucy Liu in a movie in such a long time, so it was really nice to see her onscreen again!

One theme the movie focuses on (arguably the main theme) is the decline of print media. I knew the magazine industry was struggling, but I hadn’t realized just how severe the situation had become. My parents still get magazines delivered to the house, while I choose to read them on my iPad; I guess that should’ve been my clue. That theme gave the story a timely and interesting angle, even when the overall plot didn’t feel completely necessary.

Spoiler-free takeaway: The Devil Wears Prada 2 is a nostalgic and fashionable reunion with characters you know and love. It doesn’t capture the magic of the original movie, but it’s still an entertaining sequel for fans.

Who or What Stole It

My pick: Nigel, played by Stanley Tucci

The standout for me was Nigel. He has always looked out for Andy, and I loved seeing their friendship continue in the sequel. Stanley Tucci brings so much warmth and heart to the role. Plus, after everything Nigel has done for Miranda Priestly and Runway, he deserves his damn flowers!!

What Stood Out and Stayed with Me

The movie’s exploration of the fall of print media is what stayed with me the most. The way the story framed the magazine industry’s decline felt very on-brand for Miranda Priestly and the Elias-Clark executives. It was interesting to return to the glamorous fashion world of Runway and see how much the industry has changed since the original movie.

I also cannot, for the life of me, understand why Andy is so loyal to Miranda! Like, this is a woman who basically abused you in your 20s and then practically forgot you existed… make it make sense! Their relationship remains compelling because Andy knows exactly who Miranda is, yet she still seems drawn back into her world.

The Verdict

As much as I wanted to love The Devil Wears Prada 2, I didn’t enjoy it as much as the first movie. It was good, but not great. At times, it felt like a sequel made for the sake of making a sequel, and I’m still not entirely sure what its larger purpose was.

That said, I enjoyed returning to the world of Runway. The cast is iconic, the fashion is gorgeous, and there are plenty of nostalgic callbacks for fans of the original. I don’t think I’ll watch it again, but I’m glad I saw it.

Bottom line: The Devil Wears Prada 2 is a stylish and nostalgic reunion that’s fun for longtime fans, even if the sequel never completely justifies its existence.
