Still in Rotation: Tangle Teezer for Fine Hair

I’ve owned my Tangle Teezer for almost 2 years now. Would I purchase it again? Is this the best brush for fine hair? Here are my thoughts and my experience with the brush that made it to the Allure Beauty Hall of Fame.

Why I tried it

I started residency in June 2023 and I noticed over the first year or so that I had less and less energy to do my hair after work or on the weekends. I was in need of a brush that would help me easily detangle my hair while in the shower. I put this on my Christmas list back in December 2024 and I’ve been using this brush ever since.

What I loved

This brush glides through my hair so easily and I have never heard a single snap, crackle, or pop when using it. That’s important to me as brushing can contribute to mechanical hair damage, and the fact that I’m not hearing all these different sounds that signify damage or breakage when using this is an extremely important factor for me.

I’ve never personally used the original Tangle Teezer in my hair because to me, the bristles didn’t feel like they had any give; they felt very rigid, and I felt like that was a recipe for disaster knowing the texture of my individual strands. I do have friends that have the original Tangle Teezer and they absolutely love it, but these friends have much thicker individual hair strands than I do.

One of the biggest reasons I keep reaching for this brush is that I get better product distribution while using less product. I did an experiment a few weeks ago where I applied deep conditioner to my hair. On one side I applied my usual amount without brushing and on the other side I applied my usual amount with brushing. On the side I didn’t brush through, I spent more time working the conditioner into my strands and still needed more product to get a similar result.

Right now, my go-to deep conditioners are Amika Hydro Rush Mask and Eva NYC Therapy Session. The Amika is an expensive product, so the fact that this brush allows me to get more use out of one container is an absolute game changer! Both of these conditioners already have a lot of slip that allows me to detangle easily. With this brush the tangles really do just melt away. Even with a ton of conditioner on my hands and in my hair, I’m still easily able to grip the brush with soaking wet hands in the shower.

Now you may be thinking: ‘Ok girl this is a good brush for when you’re in the shower, but what about out of the shower?!’ Let me tell you, this is a good brush out of the shower too! I use this to make sure that my pre-shampoo treatments are coating each and every strand. Right now, I flip-flop between the African Pride Miracle Moisture Pre-Shampoo and the L’Oreal EverPure Bond Repair+ Pre-Shampoo. Just like with my deep conditioners, I’m using less product and getting effective strand coverage. I reached for it on a recent braid-out too, and loved the results.

I don’t use this brush while blow drying my hair. Tangle Teezer actually recommends keeping its detangling brushes away from heat because the teeth can melt. So if I need tension while blow drying, I reach for my Pattern Beauty Shower Brush instead. But I do use this to brush through my strands after a blow dry (like for a mid-week hydration refresh), and I will echo the same thing I said in the beginning: I have never heard a single snap, crackle, or pop when using this brush.

Tangle Teezer The Ultimate Detangler for Fine Hair. This brush is 2 years old and you can see some of the bent bristles and hair at the base that is challenging to completely clean out.
My well-loved Tangle Teezer for Fine Hair. I love this brush so much. You can see some of the bent bristles and some strands of hair at the base of the bristles.

What I didn’t love

One thing I don’t like is how difficult it is to remove hair from the bristles. I do find it really difficult to remove some of my hair strands from the brush. Normally, I can use the end of a rat tail comb to get hair off the base of the bristles, but with this one I have had to go in with a dedicated hair toothbrush in order to really remove the remaining hairs. I also wash my brushes once or twice a month by soaking them in a clarifying shampoo. While soaking, I can get hairs out of most of my brushes really easily, but with this one (even sitting in water for several hours) the hairs are still in there and haven’t budged.

I’ve owned this exact brush since December 2024, and I’ve noticed that the bristles have bent more and are not as straight as they were when I first got the brush; I don’t think that this has decreased the effectiveness though. Now, I haven’t counted every single time I’ve used the brush, but let’s say I’ve been using it one to two times per week since I got it. That averages out to about 125 uses ($0.14 per use so far). This brush still has a lot of life left in it and for this to be one of my main complaints, I’d still say that’s an excellent cost per use.

Who I think it’s for

This is an ideal brush for anyone with fine hair that needs a gentle and effective brush to get through their tangles without causing much extra damage. It’s great to smooth out the hair and make sure there are no tangles before moving on to the styling steps in your routine.

The verdict

Rating: 5/5 ★★★★★

Bottom line: This is an amazing brush that will stay in my arsenal for a long time. If my current brush were to go missing tomorrow, I’d repurchase the same one without a second thought.

Are you a fan of Tangle Teezer or do you have a different go-to detangling brush? I’m also a fan of the Pattern Beauty Shower Brush, let me know if you’d like to hear my thoughts on that!

With love,

Ash ♡

  1. […] Now I know I said earlier that my hair felt really well detangled with just my fingers and my leave-in conditioner, but to ensure that the hair is as smooth as possible before installing my braids I had to run a brush through each section. For this I used my Tangle Teezer for fine hair. […]
